Afrigadget!
I thought I’d make this my contribution to the Afrigadget files – although I’m sure it has probably featured already.
You don’t see much in the way of toys here – this is one of two staples. It’s normally either the above car or a simple hoop and stick.
At the centre of it is a bamboo steering column that is split to incorporate a steering wheel. At the other end – direction is dictated from a sardine tin with a length of twine to the wheels.
All in all, pretty cool.

In Kenya, a another popular toy is the old tyre, used in the same way as the hoop, except it is more difficult to stop.
Kids with nothing will play with anything, and I bet they are a lot happier in their play than most “Western” kids, with their Playstations, computers, etc.
