Hi Fellow Aid Workers,

Well . . . it turns out a LOT of the relief-workers in Cameroon apparently have gout! I’ve received many comments and questions from my previous post, so I’m writing again to give you more info.

Here are the biggest question on eveyone’s minds:

What is a purine?

What do I need to know about purines in foods?

What does a low purine diet look like?

Here we go:

Purines are chemical substances in foods that, when broken down by the liver, get transformed into uric acid. And as we all know, uric acid is the substance that builds up in our bodies to create a gout attack. So, keeping our consumption of purines in foods in check is a first line of defense against getting gout attacks.

For more information please click on those links above to get a good purine definition, a list of purines in foods, and our recommendations for a low purine diet.

Cheers!

This site is dedicated to all the positive souls in the world who are working to help the people of Cameroon. These heartfelt individuals are motivated by passion, and driven by the desire to see improvements in the lives of the people of Cameroon.

Although Cameroon has made significant improvements in human rights, health systems and governance in recent years, significant challenges remain. Human trafficking is rampant. Severely underfunded health centers are inefficient and lack medicine. Corruption is widespread in the educational system, law enforcement and the harvesting of the eastern rain forest. There is hope, however, and many relief services are addressing these challenges.

Stay tuned for upcoming information, as this site is newly forming now.

Thank you for visiting my blog!

Sincerely,

Our Man in Cameroon

PS: I’ve received an email from a relief worker in Africa who has gout, asking for where to see some gout pictures to determine if in fact that is what he has. I am recommending a site called The Gout Killer for anyone else who needs this info. Thanks.
